GoldGuy's Slofly Simple Delta

Looks like a nice slow-flyer to build for beginners.  Based on the late Dekan's Simple Delta.

GoldGuy Says:

Twenty more square inches than my first 22 incher and one ounce lighter for a loading of 3 ounce per square feet at a 6 ounce RTF weight. It's a 8X22X17 with the elevon hinge line at 3 1/2 incher. Start off with the CG at 5 1/2" and then fine tune to taste.

Take your SD to the next level, the SSD will loop, roll, spin, snap, stall turns, harrier, prop hang, torque roll and flies inverted on rails, all this and no pitch sensitivity at any speed. Oh ya, and crazy climbing inverted flat spins the guys call 'the Dilbert' (?????).

Build it light, keep it tight.............

WS is 20"
LE is 7" long
LE to TE (hinge line) is 14.25"
Elevons are 2" wide
Fus is 8.5x1.75"
Try 5" as a CG start point from LE, mine works ok at 6" 
The Fin is 5" tall by 10.5" long.The Fin proper starts 8" from it's front and slopes back 2.5"
There are 3mmx.5mm CF flats on the leading edges....prevents damage from weeds!
There is also a 3mmx.5mm CF spar

The Tao of Nutball

Saw this here... GoldGuy is the designer of the NutBall, and apparently a student of Philosophy!

On NutBall.

  • Don't add anything that's not absolutely required.
  • Build light and you will be rewarded.
  • The reason why the NutBall is super simple is to keep it light.
  • The difference between a high and low wing loading is either no joy or pure joy. 

On Weight.

  • Be happy, build light.
  • Light is might.
  • Weight is the enemy.
  • Only slopers add weight.
  • Light is a delight.
  • That's, as in ballast... Although my belt size has grown.

GoldGuy fixes flex fabulously

Method 1 -- reinforce with 1mm carbon "needle"
  • sharpen the tip of a piece of 1mm carbon rod with 80 grit sandpaper.
  • force it into the foam, run it all the way through.  no glue necessary.
  • add one at the control horn location and any other place necessary.
  • use the piece like a needle.  thread it all the way through, clip the rod, and you've still got a sharp point to do the next piece.


Method 2 -- embedding carbon crosses
  • Drill hole in 4mm carbon tube, make a crossbar with 1mm carbon rod. Threadwrap and CA.
  • You want to make this an integral part of the wing, not just embedded into a slot.
  • Make the slot with a modified soldering iron.
  • Run a short bead of hot glue into the slot, press the CF into place.
  • Hold flat with a steel ruler until cool.
  • Open the joint, and repeat gluing until the full length of CF is attached.
  • The forced-in CF tube will have caused a bend in the foam.
  • Weigh the wing down on a dead flat surface.
  • Run a bead of hot glue on top of the CF.
  • Remelt the hot glue, making sure you glue the edges of the foam for maximum hold.
  • Use a trim iron to remove any excess hot glue as you go along.
